Abstract

The safe administration of conscious sedation in a patient with a critical airway who underwent awake tracheotomy using dexmedetomidine, a selective alpha2-agonist with sympatholytic, anxiolytic, analgesic, and sedative properties, is presented. Unlike other commonly used sedative agents, dexmedetomidine provided adequate sedation with minimal respiratory depression.
