2008, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :Target-controlled infusion (TCI) drug-delivery systems provide IV drugs based on pharmacokinetic models of a specific drug with the use of an infusion pump controlled by a computer programmed to calculate the necessary infusion rates to obtain and maintain the target concentration. TCI devices administer a bolus, followed by exponentially declining infusions to rapidly achieve and maintain a steady state drug concentration in the plasma or at the site of drug effect.43 This is in contrast to PCA/S which cannot maintain a constant plasma concentration because the constant-rate infusion will lead to an accumulating or decreasing drug level.
